Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel. Norfolk, Virginia.

Naval Chronicles. I crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel out from Norfolk, Virginia aboard USS Boulder LST1180. Years later we drove North and crossed the tunnels underwater. These postcards help us to remember both experiences.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is a 17.6-mile engineering marvel that uses underwater tunnels to allow massive Navy ships to pass overhead. Its design was driven by Cold War concerns that a collapsed bridge could trap the Atlantic Fleet, leading to the creation of four artificial islands that act as portals for the road to dip below the shipping channels. #abuelosmochileros_virginia

It links the Virginia Beach / Norfolk area (Hampton Roads) with the Eastern Shore of Virginia, replacing ferry routes that had operated for decades before its opening in 1964.
