2026 Update. Postcards to share.

Zeebrugge has some fascinating maritime history that fits perfectly into discussions about how coastal cities manage heritage sites and tourism development. The core landmark here is Seafront Zeebrugge, an experience site housed in the old fish mine buildings. For a long time, the star attractions there were the West-Hinder lightship and the Soviet Foxtrot-class submarine B-143.

If you are looking at best practices for maintaining these massive historical assets, they actually offer a great case study in the realities of heritage management. The West-Hinder lightship, which used to serve as a floating lighthouse to warn ships away from sandbanks, is still preserved and greets visitors at the site. Unfortunately, the Foxtrot submarine had to be towed away and scrapped back in 2019 because the ongoing restoration and maintenance costs became completely unsustainable for the museum. This is a very common challenge that maritime tourism professionals and urban planners face today when managing massive steel naval artifacts.
